Create bright spots in a short period of time

Last Tuesday I was in a meeting with a client and we kept pausing to check the live feeds on the Trump-Kim summit. It was more like watching an episode of The Apprentice rather than the first-time meeting of nuclear-capable foes. They made the impossible possible in a short period of time.

Some may think “and they lived happily ever after” and close the book. We believe hard work has just started.

The actual denuclearisation is a complex bureaucratic process and the Trump-Kim summit is a bright spot - the first sign that things are working. A very visual sign that both parties want to make a deal. It sets the tone for further talks. It provides a roadmap for action and hopes that change is possible. And it happened really fast.

So how do you create bright spots?

You have to test and validate new ideas. Think big, act small.

Nike's top-selling shoe almost never happened.

In 1991, Nike product manager Tom Hartge went against management’s decision and made an order for 5,000 pairs of Nike Huarache even though there were no orders from retailers. He sold them at the New York City Marathon that year, not a typical place to sell shoes, and they sold out in 3 days. Within a month, they went from zero orders to half a million. Since then, Nike has sold over 4 million pairs and the Huarache is Nike’s top-seller globally.

Tom Hartge created a bright spot that scaled to become Nike’s top-seller. If you are looking to make a positive change in a complex environment and you’re short on time and budget, why not try to create a bright spot?
